A new week, in a different country. Watching from afar with tears the recent sad events in Sydney (my home for six years). Thinking about three children who said good-bye to their mother with no idea she wouldn’t come home that night, and wanting to hug my girls and I can’t. And being so proud of the Australians who have showed solidarity through #I’llridewithyou. There is no solace really, but in an attempt to regain some balance I chose some photos for my last Lovely Milne Bay post that reminded me of the beauty and generosity that is in the world. The little boy who was confident enough to follow me around his village and tell me that his favourite subject was mathematics. The church pastor and his wife who live in a small house made of traditional materials who adopted a newborn baby without an extended family. The generous meals prepared and a boat-full of pawpaw and fresh coconuts to make sure we didn’t return home hungry or empty handed. My traveling companions who laughed, told stories and snoozed during travel delays. The entire community who shook my hand before collectively pushing our boat out into the water. Everyone who shared their smile with me. Thank you.
